Biography
"For me painting expresses a need to bring to life the endless pictures that I have painted in my mind. My goal in each painting is to capture a happy moment in time when a slower paced life allowed for a greater appreciation of the simple pleasures. I try to invite the viewer to step into my paintings with me to share that moment of pleasure." These are the words of artist Ann Stookey. She's a westerner who was born in Utah and raised by her grandmother on a small farm. As a child, there were many hours to fill and her grandmother encouraged her to paint and draw. Ann spent many enjoyable hours at her grandmothers kitchen table painting scenes from her imagination while enjoying the warmth of her big wood cookstove. Most of Ann Stookey's education was obtained at the University of Utah. She later continued her art education at Boise State University and has never been long without a paint brush in her hand. Ann makes her home in the wooded mountains not far from the Canadian border. Deer, elk, moose and raccoons are frequent callers at her door, and one does not have to go far to find an occasional bear or cougar. Ann Stookey has chosen to romanticize a time past, a time when family unity was stronger and a sense of community greater, doing it in an effort to reflect the longing of our age for a simpler and hopefully more rewarding life.
