ENJOY A SUCCESSFUL TALENT SEARCH If you're an experienced print art director/art buyer, you probably don't need any pointers on selecting the right talent for the right project. However, if you are new to this job description, please remember "It's not as easy as it looks." Art Buyers are considered a highly respected skill within most print production companies. Don't just pick an artist because you like the work. In most cases an art buyer will have a mental image in mind. Remember that the illustrator will not be able to read your mind, and you need to articulate your desired image with descriptive words to the best of your abilities. You must first analyze the image or project you are trying to create, finding the words that will help in your description. Then match the descriptive words with the 'Skill Search' words that best describes the illustrator and his or her experience. If animals are required, choose an artist whose portfolio properly relates to your mental image with the animals within that illustrator's portfolio. If 'realistic' people are desired, then choose an artist with that skill; match requirements to the specialities like food, children, medical, technical, etc. Choosing the wrong illustrator for a project is not productive for anyone. If you want assistance with this process, just call us at 1-800-486-1248. We're glad to help, and try to answer all calls between 9:00AM and 8:00PM EST. STOCK IMAGERY: This is for someone who doesn't want to commission an illustrator for a custom image, but is looking for an existing image one can inexpensively purchase the reproduction rights to. If you happen to find that perfect image, look under 'Image Info' to see if any 'rights' are available for the illustrator to sell. If no rights are available, then maybe it's time to consider commissioning that illustrator for your project. Call us so we can negotiate a reasonable and competitive cost. ORIGINAL ART: Often project negotiations will leave the original illustration in the hands of the illustrator, allowing for its sale to a private collector. Remember that owning the original doesn't necessarily allow you to own any rights to reproduce the image. To find if the original art is available for purchase, look under 'Image Info.' If it says 'Original- owned by artist,' then we can help. Again, just call us at 1-800-486-1248.
